Happy Birthday, Shirley
50 is one of those great big scary round numbers - my own 50th is staring
at me from next spring up ahead. I find that as time passes, we lose the
comforts of childhood. Health issues come up. We reach decision points
where we realize that we cannot let this or that drift by anymore without
acting on it: If we don't do it now, the opportunity may not come back.
These points have been scattered along the way (Do I want to have a
family ? Do I want to work abroad ? Do I want to take a leadership role
professionally ? Do I want to try a career in a different field ?) but the
markers seem to be closer now. I hear that people in their 90es stop
planting tomatoes in the spring, because they don't expect to be around
to harvest them, but I hope to not get to that point myself.
Shirley, I think you are doing well. You are certainly taking on a lot of
leadership and helping the rest of us do the same. I feel privileged to
have met you and been allowed to learn from you, and I hope most of
your endeavors are as successful as those I have seen. I hope your
half-century finds you in high spirits, and send
Love, hugs and kisses
